Untitled 1 by nightserpent Untitled 1 by nightserpent
Acrylic on board, 11x15" This is another of my un-planned pieces (starting with sweeping abstract brush strokes until I start to recognize shapes, much like one might recognize things while gazing at clouds in the sky. Then I refined those shapes and ran with my stream of consciousness). The eye was the first part I saw, after that became a desire to see the eye set back in space to give it a much grander sense of scale. My earlier ideas made for an even more precarious walkway, though after discussing it with a friend I realized that it wasn't my ultimate goal to create so much unease for the viewer (that's no way to thank them for viewing my art, is it?). As for the stairs and walkway, I think it has something to do with making choices in life.

wow, that looks fantastic!  I love the detail on the stairs, and the scale works beautifully. very impressive.

But it need a name!!

Thank you! :)  I sometimes call it 'the eye', I thought it might give it away but I've noticed how so many people do not notice the eye at first.

'the eye' seems pretty fitting to me ^.^ though I can't see how people miss it!

  Thank you very much!!  Though I don't generally try to disturb my viewers, I'll admit I was going for a little vertigo in this one.

Somehow, it reminds me of college,,, climb up, up, and up,,, and then drop back down to who knows where,,, then the drop to no-where, all while under the ever-seeing eye of the administration! Come to think of it, that is kinda how it felt while teaching, too. Great pic! Just strangely familar.

Come to think of it, my college was on the side of a hill as well- I don't think a single student graduated without seriously developed legs. Nothing like lugging all one's supplies up the hill after a long day.

thanks! :)

Thanks for saying that, I've been trying to steer my personal art in that direction so it's quite nice to read that you see it that way! :)

That eyeball!

You know, it seems as you do more of these unplanned paintings, they appear to be drifting farther and farther into some other dimension. Like how some of the first few ("The Guide", "Temple of Forbidden Knowledge") seemed to be more "on Earth", albeit in strange, forbidden place--perhaps a gateway? And the ones with the suspended walkways and that, like some other, higher dimension.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, but it is strange to think where the subconscious can go when you let it.

Britta, thanks so much for the insightful comments and observations, it's especially enjoyable that you're making connections over the series of paintings. I think you're spot-on, at least what you're saying is matching my intent... a descent into the subconscious- or an ascent to another plane.

Another amazing work! The birds' flight is depicted with great realism and its a great touch to suggest the epic scale of the eye. The technique is just perfect.

Thanks Matteo! :) I've been experimenting with a magnifying headset to get crisper detail, and I think the ability to create such tighter detail in certain areas allows for more contrast and realism. Plus, I get to feel like a mad scientist.

Everytime I see another of those unplaned paintings from you, I think I also should do this again (but I have some commissions at the moment, so this has to wait).

Nope, no Facebook yet, I'm still on the fence. It looks like a massive time-suck, though certainly it would have some good networking opportunities. I'm generally more of an email user.

Knowing what I did to Myspace, my arrival to FB would certainly be it's death knell.
